Fuengirola
Originally founded by Phoenician traders, who used it as a fish-salting harbour, Fuengirola later became Roman, Moorish and then Spanish. For centuries it fell victim to North African pirates, who raided for loot and slaves, but since the 1950s the town has been an integral part of the Costa del Sol, its long sandy beaches lined with resort hotels and holiday apartments.
Vibrant, cosmopolitan and at once also typically Spanish, this is a town with a pace and ambience that is unmistakably Andalusian, and as a result a very pleasant place to wander the streets shopping or visiting the many local restaurants, cafés and tapas bars.
